"There's something for everyone."

Alberni District Secondary School had a strong showing at their 63rd annual Totem tournament, with both the senior boys and girls basketball teams finishing in the top three.

The senior girls made it to the finals after winning their first two games of the tournament, but lost their final match to Lambrick Park, 37-24, and placed second overall.

Meanwhile, the senior boys went 1-1, then won their last game against the top-10 ranked Esquimalt, 67-51, to take third place. First place went to Reynolds, after a 64-61 win over Isfeld.

“It was a little bittersweet for the girls,” admitted ADSS athletic director Mike Roberts. “But we knew that it was going to be competitive. There were lots of positives. We’re not disappointed by any means.”

ADSS ended up with two tournament all-stars: Jayden Moss from the senior boys, and Bree Anderson from the senior girls.

“Those aren’t easy things to do, either,” said Roberts.

Luchia Bernar of the dance team was crowned Totem Spirit winner at the end of the night.

“I’m so proud of the Dance Team and everything they have done,” she announced over Facebook. “Thank you to everyone for supporting the Armada Dance team in Totem 63! I am overjoyed and very thankful for this opportunity!”

She added, “This will always be a very memorable and cherishing experience for me.”

Roberts said this year’s tournament was one of the most memorable to date, with sold out crowds decked in all red every night.

“We have so much going on, there’s something for everyone,” he said.

Totem 63 also featured a pep band that performed throughout the tournament, led by Totem Spirit candidate Lachlan Duncan on drums.

“The addition of a pep band blew everybody away,” said Roberts. “I think it’s safe to say that will be a permanent fixture.”
