Venom fall to rivals in Langley final

League rivals Kelowna dampened the spirit of the Vernon Venom U14 ringette squad.

Kelowna edged Vernon 3-2 in the championship game of the Spirit of Winter tournament in Langley.

The Venom tuned up for the Fraser Valley event by beating Kelowna 5-4 the weekend before, avenging a loss to their arch-rivals one week prior. Makenna Jackson, with three, Sadi Weed and the winner from Kristen Francks.

Vernon was 4-0 heading into the final.

They faced Coquitlam early Friday morning and took the game 11-6, gaining strong offence from Jackson (3 goals), Chayse Krause (3), Sierra Lochhead (2) and Hillary Quiring (2). Defensive partners Rhys Taylor-Hawes and Caryss Hill dominated the neutral zone.

Later that day they took local rival Kelowna 10-5 with Francks and Jackson leading the scoring each with hat tricks in support of Jordan Tung, who played solid between the pipes. Kennedy Jackson picked up two helpers.

Sadi Weed found the net twice in the 14-3 Saturday morning win against Prince George with Jackson (5), Francks (3), Krause (3) and Quiring (1) also scoring. Aimee Skinner, Jasmine Horton and Hill each chipped in with 3 assists. The team faced Fraser Valley in the afternoon, winning 8-3. Lochhead and Krause each had a pair, while Taylor-Hawes, Jackson and Francks each had singles.

Vernon U16A lost in the final of the Fraser Valley Ringette Association’s 12th annual Michelle Vandale Memorial Tournament in Langley.

Vernon fell 5-0 to Burnaby-New Westminster, earning the silver medal.

Vernon opened with a 9-2 win over the hosts before falling 5-1 to Burnaby-New West. Delta scored a 5-2 win the next morning before the U16s rebounded to blank Port Coquitlam-Ridge Meadows 6-0 with Kaila Summerfelt recording the shutout.

Vernon advanced to the gold-medal match with an 11-3 romp over Quesnel.

The team played extremely well together, making many great passes and played strong defence throughout. Many players scored with some of the team getting their first goals of the season.

In Thompson Okanagan Ringette League play Saturday morning at Kal Tire Place it was Vernon taking on Vernon as the U12 Velocity fought hard against the U14B Voltage, who came out on top of a 6-4 decision.

Velocity got the scoring started as Madison Edgar buried a pass from Sydney Lewis 20 seconds into the game. The Voltage jolted back to life and got three quick goals before Lewis responded with a goal on a long distance pass from Devyn Hildebrand. Taylor Stewart added another goal on a feed from Lucia Manton before Lewis added her second of the game.

Sunday, the Velocity came out flying against the U14B Sharks from Salmon Arm, rolling to an 11-2 win.

Ebony Patrick was stellar in goal, shutting down the Salmon Arm offence early. Stewart potted four goals with four assists going to Ally Hobenshield. Lewis was frantic around the net, sniping in four goals as well, with assists going to Lauren Cooke and Teagan Schober. Emily Gilman and Edgar.
