Valley Husker duo lead Team Canada into Mexico City mayhem

Keegan Vicklund and Josh Robinson are representing their county in international matches.

Valley Huskers Keegan Vicklund and Josh Robinson are in Mexico City preparing to play in the International Federation of American Football’s 2018 World Junior Championships.

Both men are suiting up for Canada’s U-19 national team, which begins play Saturday with a game against Sweden. Their team will play three games in total. After facing Sweden they’ll move on to face either Mexico or Japan on July 18. The medal round is July 22, with Team Canada facing a to-be-determined opponent at Mexico City’s Olympic Stadium.

“The energy and excitement that the people of Mexico City have for this tournament is second to none,” said Team Canada coach Steve Sumarah in a Football Canada news release. “The energy and history that you felt when you walked into Olympic Stadium, knowing that there is going to be 20,000 people there to watch, it just led to the fact that once again the growth of football in the world is amazing.

“Other countries like Australia, Sweden and Japan being there just made this a real understanding of how big this tournament is going to be.”

Canada is the defending champion, having won gold two years ago when the tournament was held in Harbin, China.
