UFV’s women’s basketball team secures playoff spot

This Saturday UFV will be honouring graduating fifth-year players

The University of the Fraser Valley women’s basketball team earned a playoff spot after winning a pair of on the road this weekend against the UNBC Timberwolves.

On Friday, the Cascades clinched a trip to the post-season with a 88-75 win over the T-Wolves thanks to strong efforts from Katie Brink (28 points), Sarah Wierks (23 points, 14 rebounds) and Shayna Litman (11 points in just 12 minutes off the bench).

On Saturday, fifth-year point guard Celeste Dyck scored a game-high 22 points and added five steals in UFV’s 85-51 victory.

The Cascades, third in the Explorer Division with a record of 11-7, will host a first-round playoff series Feb. 20 to 22 against the Pioneer Division’s sixth-place team.

The UFV men’s basketball team, which had already clinched first place in the Explorer Division, split their weekend series with UNBC.

On Friday, UFV centre Jasper Moedt netted 22 points and 14 rebounds  and helped the Cascades to a 77-71 victory.

On Saturday, UNBC had the upper hand, winning 69-57.

This weekend, UFV’s basketball teams  conclude the regular season with a pair of home games against the Thompson Rivers WolfPack on Friday (women 6 p.m., men 8 p.m.) and Saturday (women 5 p.m., men 7 p.m.).

During Saturday’s games, there will be  Senior Night festivities to honour four graduating fifth-year players: Sarah Wierks and Celeste Dyck of the women’s team, and Jasper Moedt and Kadeem Willis of the men’s squad.

Meanwhile, the  Cascades wrestling program will be participating at the University of Calgary for the Canada West championships on the weekend.

The men’s squad is ranked No. 1 in the nation, and they have a chance to win a conference banner in their first-ever season of competition.

The UFV volleyball teams are on the road to face the Capilano Blues on Friday and Saturday (women 6 p.m. and men 8 p.m. both nights, webcast at sportscanada.tv/pacwest).
