UFV Cascades baseball coach to represent Canada

Wes Darvill will join 23 others wearing the maple leaf at a Pan American Games qualifier in Brazil.

University of the Fraser Valley baseball coach Wes Darvill will represent his country at a Pan American Games qualification tournament later this month.

Baseball Canada revealed a 24 man roster this week that will travel to Brazil.

The tournament, running Jan. 29 to Feb. 3, has Canada in an eight-team field that includes Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.

The top four teams in the tourney will qualify for the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

Darvill is one of five infielders on the roster. The graduate of Langley’s Brookswood secondary school spent last year playing in the minor league system of the Los Angeles Dodgers, logging time at the rookie, AA and AAA levels. Versatility is a calling card for Darvill, who has played every position on the diamond except catcher and center field during his career.

He even pitched an inning in relief for the AA Tulsa Drillers last season.

Other B.C. boys on the roster include Adam Loewen (pitcher, Surrey), Jared Mortensen (pitcher, Abbotsford), Scott Richmond (pitcher, Vancouver), Kellin Deglan (catcher, Langley), Dustin Houle (catcher, Penticton), Jesse Hodges (infielder, Victoria) and Michael Saunders (outfielder, Victoria).

Houle has been in Chilliwack lately, training with the Fraser Valley Baseball Academy after signing with the New York Mets.

Darvill, Houle and the rest will head to Florida for a training camp running Jan. 22-26 before heading on to Brazil.

They open Jan. 29 against Panama.
