Two Surrey teams at AAA girls provincial basketball championships

Panorama Ridge and Lord Tweedsmuir squads open tourney on Wednesday

Panorama Ridge and Lord Tweedsmuir senior girls basketball teams in action during the 2017 Surrey Goodwill Classic tournament held in January.

SURREY — Two powerhouse Surrey teams are on a potential collision course at the 2017 TELUS AAA Girls Provincial Basketball Championships.

The tournament opens on Wednesday (March 1) at Langley Events Centre’s Centre Court with Panorama Ridge Thunder facing Sir Winston Churchill at 3:30 p.m., followed by Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers against R.A. McMath in a 7 p.m. start.

Both Tweedy and Panorama Ridge are in the tournament’s top bracket, and they could face each other on Final Four Friday (March 3) if both teams win their opening pair of games on Wednesday and Thursday.

The two squads met on Jan. 7 in the final of the all-Surrey Goodwill Basketball Classic, with Panorama Ridge taking the tourney title with a 76-71 win.

The other 12 teams in the AAA girls tourney are Carson Graham, Kelowna, Abbotsford, Claremont, Brookswood, Prince George, Yale, Argyle, Dover Bay, Walnut Grove, Mt. Baker and Oak Bay.

In AA girls hoops action, also at Langley Events Centre starting on March 1, Southridge is the only Surrey team at provincials. The South Surrey team faces South Kamloops at 10:15 a.m. on the South Court. CLICK HERE for the 2A schedule.
