Top squash players battling it out in Penticton

Penticton Fitness and Racquet Club is hosting the 10th annual Squash Tournament this weekend

Over 50-top level players will be battling it out for $1,500 in prize money this weekend at the 10th annual Squash Tournament at Penticton Racquet and Fitness Club.

Action gets underway Friday (Jan. 11) afternoon in divisions A through D, men’s, women’s and juniors.

“I think squash is really gaining popularity. We have our crew of people we know and since we took ownership in August, we’ve had a considerable number of people come in and ask to play from the beginner level to those who haven’t played for many many years and they’re wanting to get back into it,” said owner/manager Tricia Roy. “As well, we’re reaching out to the juniors. We’re seeing more teenagers starting to get involved which is very important for the future.

“It seems as though back in the 70’s and 80’s it was really really popular and then it seemed to lose popularity, but it seems to be coming back in the last few years.”

This is just one of a series of similar tournaments held throughout the province during the winter months.
