In what ended up being an all-Langley final, the Langley Fundamental Middle school’s junior boys volleyball team won the B.C. provincials on the weekend.
The Titans defeated Langley Christian in three of four sets (24-14), (25-23), (16-25), and (25-19) in the final that took place in West Kelowna’s Mount Boucherie Secondary on Nov. 22.
“Our guys played really well and really jelled,” said Titans coach Dan Johnson. “In the second set, it was really close and in the third they beat us, but all our key players were really strong for us and we had good passing for the win.”
Johnson said Langley Christian was tough to beat.
It’s been an amazing season for the Titans who won the Fraser Valley championships this month. It’s been a battle of the Langley schools before, with the Titans up against Langley Christian Lighting in the Langley district title. In that tournament, Titans also came out on top.
But both teams went into the finals playing very strong.
The key to having such a successful run is that returning players from last year tasted a near win in their loss to MEI in semi-finals 2013.
“I think when you go through that and get that close, the boys really drew on that and came up so strong. The key to our game is good passing and if we can run the middle fast we have good offence and we are tough to beat,” said Johnson.
Titan middle Phil Stahl was named the provincial tournament MVP.
First all-stars in the tournament were Titans Max Heppell and Zec Johnson.
