Chargers, Vikes in action; Greater Victoria Hall of Fame seeks nominations

The Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame is looking for nominations for inductees for the class of 2015. Nominations will close however Feb. 28. Some local inductees include Geoff and Russ Courtnall for their numerous hockey achievements, and lacrosse stars Paul and Gary Gait. Learn more at gvshof.ca

Batter up! Registration is under way for Gordon Head at Lambrick Park Baseball Association. Programs are available for players between the ages of five and 29, with online registration available to Feb. 28: gordonheadbaseball.org/registration_info/index.php.

For Little League fans, Layritz Little League Baseball and Softball welcomes his hosting two in-person registration sessions for players ages four to 12. Visit Layritz Park Saturday, Feb. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon and Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. Lake Hill Little League and SVI Softball are still taking registrations for the 2015 ball season. Children can start as early as the age of three up until 18 years old. Register online at lakehillball.com.

Saanich Lacrosse Association is still taking registrations for the spring 2015 box lacrosse season for all kids born 1999 to 2010. Evaluations are already under way, but it’s not too late to join. The association will host a female-only box lacrosse team, as well as the traditional co-ed teams. For information visit www.saanichlacrosse.com

Camosun is preparing to host the PACWEST Provincial Volleyball Championships Feb. 26 to 28. Leading up to next weekend, Camosun hosts Vancouver Island University this Saturday, Feb. 21 at PISE, with the women’s game starting at 6 p.m. and the men following up at 8 p.m.

In Chargers basketball, the squad hosts the Kwantlen Eagles Friday, (Feb. 20), with the women tipping of at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 21, Camosun hosts CBC Bearcats, with the women at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m.

The University of Victoria Men’s basketball team enjoys a bye week to gear up for the Canada West Quarter-finals, hosting the University of Calgary, Feb. 27, 28 and March 1 (Game 3 if series is tied). Catch the action at McKinnon Gym beginning at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 and 28, and 2 p.m. March 1.

On the women’s side, the Vikes host Calgary in the best-of-three Canada West Play-In Series, with the winner advancing to the Canada West Quarter-Finals. Catch the action in McKinnon Gym Friday and Saturday (Feb. 20 and 21) at 7 p.m with Game 3, if needed, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m., McKinnon Gym.

Also from campus, Vikes swimmers dive into Saanich Commonwealth Place for the CIS Swimming National Championship, continuing Friday (Feb. 20) and Saturday (Feb. 21).

Head outside for a handful of Vancouver Island women’s field hockey games taking to the UVic turf in the next week. Sat. Feb. 21 showcases four women’s games starting with the Ravens and Demons at 9:30 a.m. followed by the Renegades and Evils at 11 a.m., and the Cardinals and Sailors hitting the pitch at 3:30 p.m. The Lynx 2 and Blue Jays finish the day off with a 5 p.m. game. Just one local game is on the calendar Sunday when the Lynx 1 and Patriots square off at 9 a.m. Mid-week, the Renegades play the Lynx 3 squad at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
