Terrace youth soccer teams battled through playoffs over the last few weeks, with some intense final showdowns early this week.
It was a tight rematch against Mr Mikes (black) and McElhanney (green) in the U11/12 boys double-knockout finals on Wednesday.
Their prior playoff trial had seen Mr. Mikes prevail in a shootout, and McElhanney dribbled their way up through the backdoor to meet Mr. Mikes again in finals.
The game was a 2-2 tie by the second half, with both teams holding off a number of attacks to maintain their stand.
With close to five minutes left in the game, an offensive push by Mr. Mikes ended in a penalty kick, where Cory Mertin booted the ball in the bottom corner to put Mr. Mikes ahead 3-2.
They managed to hold onto the lead to take the win for the U12 finals, and referee Gage Kluss said it was a great game.
“The (age) 11-12’s are always the most fun to ref ’cause the kids are so into it,” said Kluss.
“They both played amazing… it was 2-2 right to the end and then they scored that penalty shot to win it, but it was nice that neither team gave up when it happened and still fought back after.”
The other division winners were as follows:
U9/10 Boys – Westland Insurance beat Sight and Sound in a shootout after a 3-3 tie.
U9/10 Girls – In another shootout, Golder Associates prevail over Gemma’s after a 4-4 tie in finals.
U11/12 Girls – Skeena Mall beat Daybreak Farms 1-0.
U13/14 Boys – Home Hardware conquered Canadian Helicopters 13-1, partly due to player shortages.
U13/14 Girls – Dairy Queen won first after beating Terrace Chrysler in finals 5-0.
