Terrace peewees hit first at tournament

With only three practices under their belts, the Terrace peewee girls have shown what they are made of by winning a tournament in Prince George.

With only three practices under their belts, the Terrace peewee girls have shown what they are made of by winning a tournament in Prince George.

The team travelled for the tournament June 4 and 5 and coach Carmen Didier said they blew the competition away, winning the event with a 4 -1  record overall.

The team came out of the round robin with two losses and one win, advancing them into the top four and the finals.

“The girls have a strong defensive team but were a little surprised with the speed of the pitching at the start of the tournament,” Didier said, adding after the second game the players started to ‘dial’ in to the faster pitches and their bats came alive. In the semi-finals the peewees took on the top contending team, Quesnel, and defeated them 16-2, moving to the finals against the Prince George Hornets, who they beat 13-9 for the tournament win.

Didier said the best part of the tournament was the teamwork and the support the players had for each other.

“That’s what wins games,” she explained.

Next for the team will be a tournament in Smithers June 11, which Didier said will be interesting as the all-girls team will be up against mixed boys and girls teams at the event.
