Masters Games are nothing new.

There are provincial, national and world maters games, but later this month the inaugural Americas Masters Games will take place in Vancouver.

The games will be contested between nations of the Americas and Caribbean.

The Games are for athletes 30-years-old and up and will feature 24 different sports.

One of the teams that will be representing the Shuswap in the Games is the Shuswap Storm, a 50+ women’s ice hockey team.

“When I first suggested we do this, there were 13 women over 50 who still play hockey every week through the winter. Some play on competitive teams and the rest play in the Monday night league,” said Jan Naylor.

Unfortunately, not all of these women could make the commitment for the week in Vancouver, so the team consists of nine locals and one Victoria player.

The team ranges in age from age 51 to 65.

There are three teams in the Storm’s division and the competition gets underway on Aug. 27 until Sept. 4. Also representing the Shuswap will be a women’s soccer team in the 50+ age division led by Tricia Martin.
