Parksville racer Brent Murray walked away with the “Wally” trophy as fastest man on the track after winning the funny car class in the National Hot Rod Association’s Northwest National Open drag races at Mission Raceway Park.
Brent and his Damn Yankee funny car team topped an 11-car field to claim the trophy. After qualifying with a time of 6.75 seconds at 206 miles per hour on the quarter-mile track, Murray worked his way through the heats into the final against Greg Howland of Wenatchee, Wash.
In the finals, Murray had a run of 6.74 seconds at 206 mph to beat out Howland’s 6.86 at 186 mph.
Their next action for Murray and his Damn Yankee team will be at the Nitro Jam in Woodburn, Ore., on August 20-21.

Oceanside Hospice golf benefit on tap
Registration continues but the deadline is fast approaching to register for the 19th annual Oceanside Hospice Charity Golf Tournament, scheduled for Aug. 13 at Eaglecrest Golf Club.
The tourney features 13 holes of play in a scramble format with four-person teams, a prime rib buffet dinner, a silent auction and prize raffles.
Sign-in for the tourney will begin at 11:30 a.m., with play to begin with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m.
Registration is $99 per player, with an extra dinner ticket available for $35 each. All proceeds from the event remain in the Parksville Qualicum Beach region to help fund hospice programs and services.

Beach volleyballers play for crowns
Beach volleyball players will attempt to become royalty when Oceanside Outdoor Sports hosts the Keith Johnson King and Queen of the Beach tournament Aug. 6 at the beach courts in Parksville’s Community Park.
The tournament is for doubles teams in men’s, women’s and youth divisions from U-14 to U-18.
Competition will be held in four categories: recreational, competitive, super competitive and open (including players with university or pro experience).
On the same day, OOS will host the third event in the Youth Sand Series doubles competition.

Whitecaps soccer camp Aug. 9-11
The Vancouver Whitecaps will host a three-day Youth Prospect Camp for players from U8 to U16, Aug. 9-11 at the Springwood School fields. Sessions will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon each day, led by Whitecaps FC Island Academy head coach Kevin Lindo and Upper Island associate head coach Larry Stefanek.
Players will receive instruction designed to take their game to the next level while also being scouted by Whitecaps FC Academy staff.
