Trinity Western hockey teams wins two one-goal games to close out fall portion of BC Intercollegiate Hockey League season

The Trinity Western Spartans closed out the first semester schedule with a pair of one-goal victories.

The Spartans hockey team edged the Selkirk Saints 7-6 in overtime on Friday before posting a 1-0 win over the Eastern Washington Eagles on Saturday.

Both games were on the road and give TWU a 10-3-0-0 record, just one point behind SFU for the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League lead.

Jarrett Fontaine’s second period power-play goal stood up as the winner while Lucas Mills stopped all 35 shots in a 1-0 win over Eastern Washington on Saturday in Cheney, Wash.

Mills improved to 3-0-0 and has allowed just one goal on the season.

“Full credit to Eastern Washington because they were really good and played a great team game. They forced us to match their effort and systems play,” said Spartans coach Barret Kropf.

“Lucas made some solid saves during some extended penalty kill time.”

“In the end, we got four points out of the weekend, which is a great way to go into the break.”

The night before in Castlegar, Jamey Kreller scored in overtime to cap off a wild 7-6 win over Selkirk.

The Saints twice overcame multi-goal deficits to force overtime.

Fontaine had three goals and two assists while Kreller had two goals and three helpers. Evan Last also had four assists while Dirk de Waal and Brett Wur had one goal apiece.

Silas Matthys made 33 saves in the victory.

The Spartans resume league play on Jan. 14 when they travel to Victoria to face the Vikes.
