Spartans back in post-season dance

Trinity Western returns to the Canada West playoffs for the first time in seven seasons

The Canada West season started against Victoria but the Trinity Western Spartans hope it doesn’t end against that same Vikes team.

The TWU women’s basketball team is in the post-season dance for the first time in seven seasons.

The Spartans qualified on the final weekend of regular season play, defeating the host Lethbridge Pronghorns 86-63 and 78-62 to finish at 8-12 and claim the final playoff spot in Canada West.

Kayla Gordon — named the Canada West second star of the week — tied a school record with 35 points in the decisive victory.

“Tonight’s game was probably one of our toughest mental battles of the year. We found ways to take leads but Lethbridge fought back hard and made it a 40 minute battle. I’m really proud of how we hung on and showed composure at the end and with some outstanding performances and tough, tough minutes we were able to get the job done,” saidTWU head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul.

“We still have a lot to learn about ourselves and what we are capable of achieving on both sides of the floor, but there was definitely some growth and maturity that took place tonight and our program is going to benefit from that.”

The best-of-three playoff series will be in Victoria with games one and two on Friday and Saturday night. If necessary, the deciding game would be Sunday afternoon.

The Spartans opened the season with a 78-70 overtime win against the Vikes before Victoria took the rematch 77-52. Victoria was 9-11 on the season.

In addition to Gordon’s big game, Jessie Brown had 13 points while Tessa Ratzlaff chipped in with 10.

In Friday’s game, TWU used a strong second quarter (29-9) to seize control in the 86-63 victory.

Luca Schmidt had 11 rebounds and nine assists while Brown scored 19 points off the bench.
