Silverbacks shade Snakes 4-3

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks held off the Vernon Vipers 4-3 in BCHL action Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks held off the Vernon Vipers 4-3 in B.C. Hockey League action before 2,017 fans Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.

The Silverbacks completed the sweep of a home-and-home series by scoring twice on the power play while enjoying 1-0 and 4-1 period leads.

Josh Blanchard, with his ninth goal of the season, Kodi Schwarz (2nd), Chase Zieky (12th) and Damian Chrcek (3rd) handled the Silverback offence in front of Angus Redmond.

Odeen Tufto supplied his 10th and 11th snipes for the Vipers, while d-man Callum Volpe pocketed his second of the year on a third-period power play. Tuftu’s second goal of the night came with 26 seconds remaining.

The Silverbacks outshot the Vipers 46-36, including a 21-12 margin in the first 20 minutes. Andrew Shortridge took the loss.

Salmon Arm improved to 18-6-2-1 for second place in the Interior Division. Vernon dipped to 13-15-0-2, fourth and six points back of the third-place West Kelowna Warriors.

The Warriors lost 4-2 to the Langley Rivermen, while the first-place Penticton Vees ambushed the Trail Smoke Eaters 8-1.

The Vipers face the Express Wednesday night in Coquitlam and visit the Vees Friday night before hosting the Cowichan Valley Capitals Saturday night.

The Silverbacks entertain the Rivermen Saturday night and host the Capitals in a Sunday matinee (3 p.m.).
