Harnetts key cogs in Mann Cup wheel for senior lacrosse team

Less than two weeks before their 2016 season opener at The Q Centre, the Victoria Shamrocks announced the signing of gritty role players Jon and Greg Harnett for the upcoming Western Lacrosse Association campaign.

The Toronto born-and-raised brothers are fan favourites for their intensity on the floor, and they bring depth and experience to the Shamrocks’ back end. They were both key elements of the Shamrocks’ Mann Cup title last year.

Shamrocks general manager Chris Welch sang their praises after announcing the signings.

“The Harnett brothers are a huge part of our core,” Welch said in a release. “They’re fierce competitors who will do whatever it takes to win. I’ve loved watching them play since their junior days with the Orangeville Northmen, and I couldn’t be happier to have them here.”

Greg, 25, joined the Shamrocks in 2012 and has played in 51 WLA regular season games and 42 playoff games in four seasons. Jon, 27, joined his brother on the team in 2013, after four seasons with the Coquitlam Adanacs. In three seasons with the Shamrocks, Jon has played in 35 regular season games and 41 playoff games.

The Harnett brothers’ list of accomplishments also includes a Minto Cup national junior championship with the Northmen in 2008.

With the Harnetts living in Victoria year round, the Shamrocks took the step of obtaining a full release of their playing rights from the Ontario Major Series’ Cobourg Kodiaks.
