Sardis football star remembered as SFU creates golf tournament

The Rick Klassen Memorial will help provide scholarships for football student athletes.

The Simon Fraser University Football Alumni Society has created a golf tournament in memory of Rick Klassen.

Klassen, who grew up in Chilliwack, graduated from Sardis secondary school in the late 1970s.

He played his university ball at SFU before going on to a productive pro career in the Canadian Football League, highlighted by a Grey Cup win with the 1985 B.C. Lions.

He died at the age of 57 on Dec. 10, 2016 after losing a battle with lymphoma.

The Rick Klassen Memorial Golf Classic will be held July 13 at the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course. The event will include a pre-game barbecue followed by a 1 p.m. tee time.

There will be a dinner afterwards.

All proceeds from the tournament will go to the Rick Klassen Endowment Fund to provide scholarships to football student athletes at SFU.
