Roller derby season gets off to a roaring start

Brick House Betties host doubleheader at Comox Valley Sports Centre

The Brick House Betties got the local roller derby season rolling Saturday, April 18 at the Comox Valley Sports Centre with a doubleheader.

Two junior derby teams made up of skaters under age 18 played the first game. The local Stone Cold Stellas were defeated by Nanaimo’s Candy Crushers 397-175. “I love the hard work the kids bring to practice all year,” said coach Wright Krazy, also a Betties skater.

Hosts Brick House Betties took on Campbell River’s Rink Minx Roller Girls in the headliner event. These local teams last met on the track almost two years ago. The score was within a few points for most of the first half, but the Minx pulled ahead in the second to win 217-138. “We were pumped to go head-to-head against the Betties again,” said Lita Riot of the Rink Minx.

The Brick House Betties’ other home event this season is at the CVSC on Saturday, May 9 when they host Whistler’s Black Diamond Betties. A hard-fought game in Whistler last season saw the Brick House Betties win 206-175.

Tickets for May 9 will be available at the CVSC door (cash only): adults $7, youth (6-18) $5, kids 5 and under free. Doors open 6 p.m., game whistle at 7 p.m.
