Roller derby makes return to Nanaimo

Roller derby returns this week as the Harbour City Rollers play their first home bout of the season on Saturday (May 14).

It’s the most fun that can be had on a pair of roller skates, and it’s back in Nanaimo.

Roller derby returns this week as the Harbour City Rollers play their first home bout of the season on Saturday (May 14) when they take on the Vancouver Bad Reputations.

The Rollers were big winners two weeks ago on the road against the Victoria Belles of the Ball, and Amber Sparks, Rollers player, said her team is looking competitive and is honing its strategies.

Playing on their home floor at the Nanaimo Ice Centre, the Rollers will be looking to impress friends, family and fans, she said.

“We definitely are trying to get more awareness out to people in Nanaimo, because nobody really hears of it and when they do, they’re like, ‘yeah, I’d like to see that,’ but they’ve never been to a game.”

Sparks said roller derby is fast-paced, and even spectators unfamiliar with the sport will get caught up in it.

She hopes the community will get behind the hometown team.

“We are your friends and family, police officers, bartenders … your next-door neighbour that is playing in the game,” she said.

GAME ON … The Rollers take on the Bad Reps on Saturday at the NIC. Doors are at 6 p.m. and the bout starts at 7 p.m. Admission is $5, or free for children.
