Defending champions compete in final

The final match of Volleyball BC’s Super Series event, hosted at Oak Bay High School on Sunday, was a battle between defending champions.

The regional-rostered Victoria Chargers 15U boys, (2015’s B.C. champs and fourth in Canada), battled Seaside, the 16U B.C. champs from White Rock, but the local squad came up short, losing the title match 2-0 (25-21, 25-21).

“Seaside is recognized as a top team within the 16 and 17/18 age groups,” Victoria coach Rick Wutzke said. “Our Chargers are ranked as the No. 1 15U team provincially. We needed the task of a top team to challenge us to attack the ball fearlessly, and more importantly, defend with tenacity. So a close loss to Seaside was very positive.”

The Chargers started the day defeating another pair of 16U teams, Victoria Black (25-14, 25-15) and Element from Delta (23-25, 25-16, 16-14), building on Saturday’s opening-day wins over the Focus Flash (25-17, 25-10), Mariners VC (25-6, 25-10) and BCO U15 Black (25-17, 25-10).

Volleyball BC’s annual Super Series event in Victoria features 12 teams from the Lower Mainland and Island and is used as a ranking tournament for provincial and national championships, Wutzke said.

The event is also a fundraiser for the Oak Bay high boys volleyball team.

Next up for the boys from Victoria Volleyball Association are the BC Championships in Langley May 6 to 8.
