  • Aug. 15, 2012 12:00 p.m.

The Grand Forks Aquatic Centre is into its last week of operation before the annual shutdown.

Friday Aug. 17 is the final day to come down to the pool and enjoy the cool water and relaxing atmosphere. Friday is toonie day, so bring the kids down for one last dip at a bargain price. The aquatic centre will be closed from Saturday, Aug. 18 to Saturday, Sept. 8. Staff will be busy making repairs and sprucing up the place ready to re-open Sunday, Sept. 9 from 1 to 5 p.m.

The Terry Fox Run will be held in Grand Forks on Sunday, Sept. 16.

The Grand Forks recreation department will be hosting the annual event for Terry Fox’s cause toward funding innovative cancer research.

The Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $600 million for cancer research worldwide and 84¢ of every dollar raised goes to cancer research. There have been 1,180 research projects funded so far, providing the opportunity for exploration in lung, ovarian, colorectal, pancreatic, oral, liver, oncolytic viruses and many other types of cancers.

There is no entry fee and no minimum pledge to participate in the Terry Fox Run. However, the event is a fundraiser and any donation big or small is greatly appreciated. Pledge forms are available at the recreation office and aquatic Centre.

If you want to give to the Terry Fox Foundation and you have a smart phone, text terryfox to 45678 and donate $5.

Fall programming is already in place. Parents can register their children for swim lessons through the recreation office while the aquatic centre is closed.

Red Cross swim lessons will begin in October running Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 4 to 5 p.m. Preschool lessons will be taking place on Saturdays, also starting in October.

The children and youth open house is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the arena viewing room.

The event is an opportunity for community organizations and groups to come together in one place to provide registration and information to parents. The open house is free to exhibitors. However, you must book your space by contacting the recreation office.
