Raiders, Ice advance to volleyball Islands

The Highland Raiders and the host Isfeld Ice met in the opening match Thursday at the AA North Island Senior Boys Volleyball Championship. Highland won in three sets: 25-22, 19-25 and 15-10.

Isfeld was the top- ranked team in the North Island, and ranked in the top 15 in B.C. heading into the five-team tournament, but Highland came out on top at the end of round-robin play Friday. Isfeld was second, Timberline of Campbell River third, Carihi fourth and Wellington Secondary of Nanaimo fifth.

The top four teams advance to the Island championships, this weekend at St. Michaels University School in Victoria.

•Last weekend at the Senior Girls AAA North Island Championships at Ballenas Secondary in Parksville, the volleyball teams from Isfeld and Vanier earned two of five berths to the Island Championships, Friday and Saturday at Carihi in Campbell River.

Carihi, Ballenas and Wellington also qualified.

They will be joined by the top three teams from Victoria.

The top two finishers advance to the provincial championships, Nov. 28-30 in Langley.
