Prince Rupert Rapids finish first in Northwest Regional Championships

The Rapids had a total of 1102 points to beat Kitimat and Smithers

The Prince Rupert Rapids finished first in the Northwest Regional Championships, scoring 1,102 points to beat Kitimat and Smithers. The championships — which took place at the Earl Mah aquatics centre Jan. 26-28 — were an opportunity for some of the city’s young swimming talent to compete against the region’s best.

River Gerritsen (7) finished second in the 100-metre individual medley, the 50-metre backstroke and also finished third in the 25-metre butterfly. Carter Slocombe (9) won the 25-metre breaststroke. Lily McDonald (9) finished second in the 25-metre butterfly. Annabelle Demille (9) finished second in the 50-metre butterfly. Heidi Bellis (9) Finished second in the 50-and 200-metre backstroke and third in the 200-metre freestyle.

Magnus Veldman (10) won the silver aggregate in the 11-and-under boys age group, winning the 50-metre freestyle, the 100-metre butterfly and the 200-metre backstroke, and coming second in the 200 and 400-metre individual medly, the 100-metre freestyle and the 100-metre backstroke. Thor Pedersen (10) won the 50-metre backstroke and came second in the 100-metre breaststroke and 200-metre freestyle. Peter Joubert (10) won the 200-metre freestyle and finished second in the 100-metre individual medley and 200-metre backstroke. Elena Farrell (10) won the 50-metre backstroke, finished second in the 50-metre breaststroke and placed third in the 100-metre breaststroke and the 100-metre freestyle.

Iona Riesen (11) won the gold aggregate in the 11 and under girl’s age group, winning the 50, 100 and 1,500-metre freestyle, the 50, 100 and 200-metre breaststroke and the 200-metre individual medley. Sharmonie Pedersen (11) finished second in the 100 metre individual medley and 100 metre backstroke, and finished third in the 50-metre freestyle.

Allison Remo (12) won the bronze aggregate in the 12-13 girls age group, winning the 50 metre butterfly, finishing second in the 100 and 200 metre freestyle, second in the 50 and 100-metre individual medley and third in the 50 metre freestyle. Joshua Joubert (12) finished third in the 400-metre individual medley. Jakob Hall (12) won the bronze aggregate in the 12-13 boys age group, winning the 200, 400 and 1,500-metre freestyle, coming second in the 100 metre freestyle, the 200-metre breaststroke, the 200 metre individual medley and placing third in the 100-metre breaststroke. Ryder Gerritsen (12) finished third in the 50-metre breaststroke and the 50-metre backstroke. Malcolm Dolan (12) won the 50-metre backstroke, finished second in the 1,500-metre freestyle and third in the 50-metre freestyle, and the 100 and 200-metre backstroke.

Piper McWilliams (13) won the gold aggregate in the 12-13 girls age group, winning the 50, 100, 200 and 800-metre freestyle and the 50, 100 and 200-metre breaststroke. Sam Charlton (13) won the 50-metre breaststroke, finished second in the 50-metre backstroke and third in the 100-metre individual medley.

Grant Slocombe (14) won the 100 metre individual medley. Darsha Mariampillai (14) finished second in the 200-metre freestyle and third in the 50-metre backstroke. Landen Franes (14) finished second in the 1,500-metre freestyle. Isaac Dolan (14) won the 1,500-metre freestyle, finished second in the 400-metre freestyle and third in the 50 and 100-metre backstroke. Carter Brown (14) finished second in the 400-metre individual medley and third in the 100-metre breaststroke.

Bailey Ward (15) finished third in the 200-metre individual medley. Jaren McMeekin (15) won the gold aggregate in the 14 and over boys age group, winning the 50 and 100-metre breaststrokes, the 200-metre freestyle and the 50-metre butterfly, and finishing second in the 50 and 100-metre freestyle and the 200-metre fly. Lauryn Fontaine (15) won the 400 metre individual medley, finished second in the 50 and 100-metre butterfly and third in the 100-metre freestyle. Warren Barton (16) won the gold aggregate in the 14 and over girls age group, winning the 50, 100 and 200-metre butterfly, the 100 and 200-metre backstroke, the 50-metre breast stroke and the 200-metre individual medley.

Zach Dolan (16) won the silver aggregate for the 14 and over boys age group, winning the 50, 100 and 200-metre backstroke, the 50 and 100-metre freestyles and finishing second in the 200-metre freestyle.
