They needed a sudden-death playoff to decide winners in the sixth annual Founder’s Cup Saturday at The Rise Golf Club.
Devin Crombie and Dave Willis won on the second hole of the playoff against Ryan Moffat and Tyler Sproule to take the overall low gross championship.
“It was a great day with 96 participants, in three flights,” said The Rise head pro Lee Ranger. “We had a great dinner party with over $10,000 in prizes given out for the day.”
Steve Thorson and Ed Ertl won the overall low net crown at 60.6.
The tournament is named after the 21 founding members who hail mainly from Vancouver and Alberta.
Hillview pro Keith Vandenbrink finished at 73-72-145 to claim the Inkameep Men’s Open last weekend in Oliver.
“Saturday was very windy for the first nine holes, then it was calm and hot for the rest of the day and I shot a 1-over 73, one stroke behind the leaders after Day 1,” said Vandenbrink, who collected $500, aided by a skin and long drive.
In Sunday’s win, Vandenbrink recorded a string of three birdies for a 33 on the front.
“Then we all struggled on the back nine. I went three over on the back for even-par 72 and won by three shots.”
Garrett Kuchar of Osoyoos was second at 72-76-148, followed by Andrew Goncalves of Osoyoos, at 76-73-149, and Rick Crowson of Inkameep at 72-78-150.
The towering Vandenbrink travelled with Vernon Golf &CC member Gary Hinkel, who shot 78-81 to win first low net in the second flight and collect a Callaway Versa putter.
Vernon’s Bradlee Jones carded an even-par 73-73-70-216 to finish fourth in the 70th Rossland-Trail Open last weekend at the Birchbank Golf Club.
Dylan Maine of Washington State took the tourney at nine under, winning for the second time in two years. Maine is a former Community Colleges of Spokane standout.
“I hit the ball really well,” said Jones, playing the Open for the first time.
“I had three birdies and they were all tap-ins, but I had 11 birdie putts within 15 feet and couldn’t make them.”
Jones had good buddy Christian Lacasse, of Vernon, as his caddy, all weekend.
