PHOTOS: Nelson’s Max Wong wins men’s singles title at West Kootenay Open

Nelson’s Max Wong triumphed in the men’s singles final at the West Kootenay Open on Sunday.

Wong defeated defending champion Grant Stanley of Kelowna 6-3, 6-4, while Kelowna’s Krista Martens downed Wyndell’s Mary Wigen 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 to take the women’s singles title at the annual Nelson Tennis Club tournament.

Five of the 10 divisions up for grabs went to Nelson natives, who included Brian McCarthy (men’s B singles), Keith Bridger and Angus Glass (men’s A doubles), Monique Van Gendt and Anita Baars (women’s B doubles) and Ryan Martin and Dalvanir McLean (mixed B doubles).

Other winners included: Fernie’s Kathy Sutherland (women’s B singles), Kelowna’s Ron Beirman and Joel De Phyffer (men’s A doubles), Kelowna’s Eva Miller and Michele Seger (women’s A doubles), and Vernon’s Jeremy and Wendy Bell (mixed A doubles).

The event ran Friday to Sunday at the club’s courts behind L.V. Rogers.
