The sun was shining over the weekend as kayakers hit the water to race around the Salmon River in Langley.
More than 35 paddlers of all ages maneuvered around the Salmon River slalom gates near Fort Langley for the first Icebreaker flat water slalom kayak races.
The race was the first of three being hosted by the Chilliwack Centre of Excellence Paddling Club.
As an added bonus, Canadian national junior team members Kylie Zirk and Pelly Vincent-Braun assisted with the morning’s coaching clinic. Zirk is from Saskatoon while Vincent-Braun is from Whitehorse and they have been in Chilliwack training.
The pair, along with Chilliwack kayaker Jazmyne Denhollander, will represent Canada at the junior/under 23 world slalom championships in April in Brazil.
The Langley race was the first of three being hosted by the Chilliwack club.
The kayakers will again hit the water this weekend, with events on Feb. 28 in Chilliwack and March 1 in Abbotsford.
