Peewees win gold in Powell River

The Comox Valley sent one team in each age group to the season-ending All Star Tournament in Powell River on the Easter Weekend.

The Comox Valley sent one team in each age group to the season-ending All Star Tournament in Powell River on the Easter Weekend.

The four teams came home with a mixed bag of results but most importantly with a lot of smiles on their faces.

The midget group had serious trouble recruiting players and came fourth in their division.

In bantam, the Valley team faced some stiff competition. Nanaimo and Campbell River were too strong this year. But the team came together and finished with a bronze medal after a hard-fought battle with Powell River.

The atoms dominated round-robin matches and the semi-final game. It looked like a slam dunk in the gold medal game versus Campbell River. But every game is a new one, and in a heartbreaking loss, Campbell River scored the golden goal with four seconds left on the clock.

One Comox Valley Team managed to win it all. The peewee team won all round-robin games in an impressive fashion, and faced Campbell River in the final. It was a balanced game that swang back and forth, but in the end the Valley prevailed and the celebration was exuberant.

Three Comox Valley players were named to the tournament all-star team: defencemen Simon Craig and Matthew Munger, and forward Isaac Dunsire.
