For nearly 30 years the 100 Mile Old Stars Hockey Tournament has been a place where old school talent comes to shine.

The 27th annual tournament saw 12 teams take the ice in three divisions at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre in 100 Mile House, Nov. 7-9.

Minus a short delay on Nov. 8 when a zamboni malfunctioned, everything from the refereeing to the dance and banquet was outstanding this year, says organizer Greg Aiken.

“The Red Rock put on an awesome meal at the dance [at the 100 Mile House Community Hall on Nov. 8]. Rob Fry did the music and it was great. It was a really good time.”

A team from Merritt won the 55-plus division. A team from Salmon won the 45-plus division. Red Rock, a 100 Mile House team, was victorious in the 35-plus division.

Aiken says they’re hoping to attract more teams from out of town next year. Heading into the tournament, Aiken said the event was all about having a good time, seeing old friends and teammates, while telling old lies and making up new ones.

“Everybody’s got something to brag about,” he jokes. “You’ll shoot a puck from the blue line that hits three guys and goes into the bottom of the net. But by the end of the dance night, after a couple of beers, it will be an end-to-end rush, deking out the whole team, and putting the puck top corner.”

A ladies hockey tournament was held simultaneously in Lac la Hache. Teams from 100 Mile House, Quesnel and Fort St. James hit the ice.
