Northwest boys triumph in Richmond

The club volleyball team claimed three straight wins

The Northwest Summit boys club volleyball team claimed gold in the Air Attack Invitational tournament in Richmond last weekend.

With one player out with an injury, the team of seven competed in the tournament with six other teams in their age division.

They beat the Coquitlam Ducks in two sets of pool play, winning 25-11 and 25-16.

Then they overcame Victoria Red, winning the first set by a narrow 28-26, then losing 20-25, and clinching the game 15-13.

In the semi-final match, they faced Victoria Red again, but came out strong and claimed two straight sets, both 25-16.

The gold match was against Victoria Black, and the boys claimed the tournament title with two set victories, 25-17 and 25-20.

Coach Kam Siemens said she and the other coaches were impressed.

“Victoria Black had not lost a single match or set,” she said, adding that all the athletes are six-feet or taller.

“Watching this team’s previous games they serve hard and attack the ball even harder… It was quite surreal to watch how our boys rose above it all and played their hearts out,” she said.

“It was a renewed level of energy they seemed to possess.”

The next big tournament for the team is the Super Series in Kelowna April 7-8.
