Nelson soccer players score university scholarships

Hanna Quinn and Julia Burkart are on their way to post-secondary teams

Two local soccer players have earned university scholarships for their play on the pitch.

Hanna Quinn is on her way to join the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, while Julia Burkart will study and compete at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops.

Quinn and Burkart are teammates on the Nelson Selects under-18 squad who won provincial gold Sunday in Kamloops. They’ve been part of a remarkable run of success for Nelson soccer, having won five medals apiece between high school and provincial play.

The pair have also each gone through the Vancouver Whitecaps academy program in Nelson.

In addition to two entrance scholarships to Lethbridge’s Bachelor of Science program, Quinn, a goalkeeper, also earned five local scholarships including the top all-around athlete of the year award in her final year at L.V. Rogers.

Burkart meanwhile was given an athletic scholarship to attend Thompson Rivers as well as four local scholarships. The defender was also named LVR’s most outstanding female athlete.
