Local rowers won five gold medals at the Nelson Sprints Rowing Regatta on Saturday.
Dominique Preney was the big winner with four golds for the Nelson Rowing Club. He finished first in masters men’s singles, masters men’s doubles with partner Varun Hogade, masters mixed doubles with Alison Talbot-Kelly and masters men’s quad with teammates Sandy Moe, Hogade and Matt Redshaw.
Jackie Corcoran also took gold in novice women’s singles.
Seventy-eight rowers from 10 clubs competed in 18 races that were divided by three age categories. Junior and masters women’s singles races were cancelled by wind.
Nelson Search and Rescue also contributed to the event and were on hand to assist the safe recovery of overturned singles shells throughout the day.
Nelson Sprints is a Rowing Canada-sanctioned event and is presided over by umpires from our provincial rowing association. In addition, RowBC ran a youth development camp on Sunday morning that was attended by juniors aged 11 to 18 from various clubs within the southern interior. The camp’s focus was on technical skill development.
