M’s women winners on home turf

The VIU Mariners women's soccer team beat the Douglas Royals 3-1 and then shut out the Langara Falcons 1-0 at Merle Logan Field.

Vancouver Island University’s women’s soccer team took advantage of home turf to pick up a pair of wins.

The VIU Mariners beat the Douglas Royals 3-1 on Saturday and then shut out the Langara Falcons 1-0 Sunday at Merle Logan Field.

Anup Kang, coach of the Mariners, pointed out in a press release that he and his coaching staff were able to rotate in all 16 outfield players during the weekend.

“We have so much depth this year, any one of those players can make a difference and have made a difference in our success to date…” Kang said. “This group works so hard at training, they push each other to get to the next level. [It] makes the coaches’ job easier.”

Karen Battie, Nicole Foglietta and Chloe Gummer scored in the win against Douglas. The next day, Harroop Malli scored the winning goal in the 67th minute and Emily Rowbotham earned the shutout in goal.

Meanwhile, VIU’s men lost 2-1 to Douglas but hammered Langara 5-0 the next day.

Travis Brown scored on a free kick for the M’s in the loss. In the blowout win, Victor Blasco scored two, Billy Bagiopoulos scored two and then Stephen Ewashko closed out the scoring.

GAME ON … The Mariners soccer teams are on the road the next two weekends, starting with matches this Saturday (Oct. 1) and Sunday against the Capilano Blues and Quest Kermodes, respectively.
