Mount Washington Alpine Resort tossed from Ski Town Throwdown

Vancouver Island ski hill was runner-up to Aspen last year

Mount Washington Alpine Resort finished runner-up to Aspen, Colorado in last year’s Powder Magazine Ski Town Throwdown, but they won’t have a chance to win this year’s competition.

The Vancouver Island ski resort advanced to the final of the third annual Throwdown last year after winning an eight-resort play-in round just to get to the final 32. But when Powder Magazine announced this year’s contest on Oct. 12, Mount Washington was not included in the list of 32 resorts.

Representing the Great White North division this year will be Nelson, Kicking Horse, Revelstoke, Girdwood (Alaska), Red Mountain, Banff, Whistler and Fernie. Powder Magazine offered this tongue-in-cheek explanation of their selection criteria:

“We used a complicated and inexplicable math equation known as P5 (P-Pentupled), which factors vertical, snowfall, lift ticket price, sex ratios, and vote totals from previous Ski Town Throwdowns to seed each region. Extra style points were awarded to resorts with high populations of skiers wearing jeans.”

Voting is now underway. Go to powder.com for details.
