Motocross provincials taking place at Nanaimo’s Wastelands this weekend

Nanaimo Motocross Association president estimates between 100 to 150 racers participating

Motocross riders from across the province will descend on Nanaimo for the B.C. Motocross Championship series this weekend at the Wastelands Motocross Park.

The race, hosted by Nanaimo Motocross Association, and will take place Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 11-12, and riders between four years and 60 years old will compete, said Ken Parkes, Nanaimo association president.

He said it is the first time that a provincial championship series race has been held in Nanaimo and it’s great to watch.

“This is a provincial race, this is one step down from the pro nationals,” said Parkes. “We’ve done a lot of upkeep at the track … we’ve done some painting, we’ve done just some upgrades to make it look presentable and we’re going to put on a show this weekend. So we’re hoping families will come out.”

Parkes estimates between 100 to 150 racers will take part.

Freestyle Progression, which has a mobile, freestyle airbag people can come and do jumps into, will be on site, and Wise YoungBlood, a Nanaimo rock band, will perform.

There is an entrance fee of $15 per person or $40 per family, and includes admittance to the concert. The fee also includes three jumps on Freestyle Progression’s airbag.

The Nanaimo event represents the first round of the championships with the second round taking place Sept. 1-2 in Prince George and the third round in Williams Lake Sept. 15-16.
