Langley swimmer competes in elite meet in Los Angeles

A Langley Olympians swimmer earns silver in Los Angeles.

The Langley Olympians Swim Club Hillary Metcalfe shared the waters with a Russian Olympian at the 2016 Los Angeles Invitational.

“This was an elite world class meet for Hillary, and she rose to the occasion to compete,” said Brian Metcalfe, Langley Olympians head coach.

The invitational July 14 to 17 brought together elite swimmers from across the globe.

Swim Teams from Canada, Russia, California, New Jersey and New Mexico – more than 900 swimmers – competed.

Metcalfe, 18, competed in four events in which she placed in the top eight for each event.

On the second day of the competition Metcalfe won the silver medal in the women’s 400-metre individual medley with a time of 4:54.76.

On the third day of the competition Hillary won the bronze medal in the women’s 200m IM with a time of 2:19.49.

Also on the third day, she raced against Yulia Efimova (a Russian Olympic swimmer) in the women’s 200m breaststroke, placing fifth with a time of 2:34.77. Efimova won the event with a time of 2:22.27, achieving the seventh fastest 200m breaststroke time for a woman in the world.

On the final day of the competition the Langley swimmer again raced against Efimova in the women’s 100m breaststroke. Metcalfe placed sixth with a 1:11.28 and Efimovva won the event with 1:06.30.

This was Metcalfe’s last meet representing the Langley Olympians Swim Club, next season she will be studying at UBC while swimmer on the UBC Varsity Swim Team as a Thunderbird.

Second meet

The Langley Olympians also attended another meet in the United States, the 2016 Sizzlin’ Summer Invitation in Moses Lake, Wash.

The Olympians were represented by nine age group swimmers over the three-day meet in mid-July.

LOSC’s Isobel McNeill, 10, was the top point earning in the girls 10&U age category which earned her a overall trophy.
