Ladysmith Steelers Pee Wees to represent Vancouver Island at provincial championships

The Steelers have two championship games coming up including the VICFA Island Championships

The Ladysmith Steelers Pee Wee team is an unstoppable force in their division. The team finished undefeated in their regular season, capping it off with a 50 – 0 win over the Westshore Warriors.

This weekend, the Steelers take on the Southside Dawgs at the VICFA Island Championships. They will also go on to to represent Vancouver Island at the B.C. provincial championships in Kamloops on November 16.

“Our team’s never gone [to provincials] before, so this is pretty big for us,” Ladysmith Steelers Football Club secretary, Jennifer Laver said.

The Steelers are confident going in to their finals. They have one last week of practice before heading off to provincials. The team is focused on taking things one game at a time. This is not the first time the Steelers have had success, but for many on the team, it’s their first time with the Steelers.

“The parents are very excited. A lot of the parents it’s their first season with the club. There’s a lot of emotions. There were so many people crying after the last game because they were so happy for the kids,” Laver said.

The Pee Wee team is for ages 9 – 11. Laver said the team benefited from a group of older kids who played in previous season.

Although the team has had tremendous success on the field, Laver said that it wouldn’t be possible without success off the field as well.

“We have an amazing group of parents, our board is very dedicated. It’s a group effort — that’s the only way you can pull these things off. The volunteers that we have, and the drive they have to fundraise is unbelievable. They want the kids to succeed, and so the kids succeed,” Laver said.
