Lacrosse off to good start

The Rona Shuswap Outlaws Bantam Lacrosse team began the regular season this weekend with a double header against Penticton at Summerland Arena. In the first game the Outlaws scored a 9-5 victory. In the second game, the Outlaws had the run of play but some outstanding goaltending by Penticton allowed them to earn a 5-5 tie.

Austin Pugh led all scorers with six goals, while Sean McDonald, Logan Mostat and Garrett Turner added two goals each.  The Outlaws have their home opener this Saturday at 10:30 a.m. vs Kelowna at Enderby Arena.

Junior B

In Junior B lacrosse, Brett Hanna of Salmon Arm is the captain of the Vernon Re/Max Tigers this year.

“We polled the players and then made our decision,” said head coach Myles Brumpton. “He’s kind of like Jonathan Toews (NHL Blackhawks). He’s a quiet leader who leads by example, but he’s not afraid to speak up. He oozes leadership qualities.”

The Tigers won a provincial silver medal in 2009 and fell to the Kamloops Venom in a heated league final last year. Also from Salmon Arm, Brooks Christensen is back with the team.

In Peewee lacrosse, Salmon Arm was defeated 8-4 on Saturday, but came back to win 10-2 on Sunday. For Saturday’s game, the team was missing players who tried out for Team Interior.

Drew Bannister and Noah Bumstead made the team, so they will go on to try out for Team BC next month in Comox. Team BC goes on to the nationals in August in Ontario.
