Toshikan's Tatyana Melnick in top form at Salt Spring Island event

TATYANA MELNICK OF Toshikan Martial Arts in Courtenay, seen here with Toshikan sensei Mac Newton, won first place in two divisions at the recent Salt Spring Island Invitational Karate Tournament. This was Melnick's first tournament, and she won the women's kyu belt (all belts except black) kata and weapons kata divisions. 'It's quite a feat,' said Newton. 'The judges were impressed, I think, because it was evident that Tatyana trains hard.'  Also competing in the tournament was Toshikan's Glen Siddal, who fought his way to third place in men's black belt sparring.
