Junior boys go 1-2 in Terrace play day this weekend

The junior Kermodes defeated Smithers, but lost to Charles Hays and the senior Centennial boys

The Terrace Kermode junior boys basketball team hosted a playday at Caledonia Senior Secondary this weekend.

The Kermodes played three games, losing 66-70 to the senior boys from Centennial Christian School on Friday night.

On Saturday they faced Smithers Secondary, defeating them 60-33, and Charles Hays, losing 33-48.

Coach Matthew Lowndes said he felt the boys played some great competitive games.

“I thought we shot the ball well in our first two games. We have been averaging nine [three-pointers] a game, but didn’t shoot so well in the last game (against Charles Hays),” said Lowndes. “We faced a new defensive scheme, which took away our driving lanes, and forced us to take some tougher shots.

“Our team defence got better every game, and we did a good job of moving the ball up the floor well in transition.

“Our rebounding still needs some work though; as we gave up a few too many second chance opportunities in the defensive end.”

Lowndes said if the team continues focusing on teamwork, and sacrifices for each other, it should turn out to be a fun year.

The Terrace play day was the home opener for the junior boys, who play their two big tournaments in January, one in Prince George Jan. 5-6, and one in Kamloops Jan. 19-21.
