Jock Talk: Rugby returns to Windsor Park

UVic Vikes host Shoot for the Cure Friday

Following a long break over the holidays, rugby finally returns to Windsor Park this weekend when the Castaway Wanderers host Capilano.

In Premier women’s play, CW and Capilano take to the field at 12:45 p.m. this Saturday, Jan. 27, while Castaway Wanderers 2 also hosts Capilano 2. In men’s Premier league action, the Castaway Wanderers welcome Capilano at 2:30 p.m. at the Oak Bay field.

Securing a playoff spot last week with wins over the University of Northern British Columbia, the University of Victoria Vikes women’s basketball players aim to extend their eight-game win streak this weekend.

UVic’s men and women both return to home court, playing two games against the Mount Royal Cougars at CARSA. The Vikes women open play Friday, Jan. 26, tipping off at 6 p.m., before the men hit the court at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 27, the women play at 5 p.m. before the men play at 7 p.m.

Friday’s game is also Shoot for the Cure night and both Vikes basketball teams will don pink jerseys in support of the Canadian Cancer Society and other related local and provincial charities. Raising $50,320.87 in its first year, Shoot for the Cure has now grown to include all 47 U SPORTS women’s basketball schools and has raised $1,133,558.61 to date.

After last weekend’s game against West Vancouver was cancelled due to weather conditions, the UVic men’s field hockey team hosts the United Brothers this Sunday, Jan. 28 at 12:30 p.m. at UVic.

In high school soccer, Tuesday, Jan. 30 has the senior girls team hosting Royal Bay at 5:45 p.m. before the Oak Bay senior boys head over to Belmont to take on their senior team at 7:30 p.m.

The Oak Bay high turf plays host to men’s soccer this Sunday, Jan. 28 with the Div. 3A Bays United FC hosting Vic West at 2:15 p.m. The Div. 4A Bays United FC follows, facing Lakehill at 6:45 p.m.

Div. 1 women’s soccer continues with Castaways FC taking on the Juan de Fuca United at PISE on Saturday, Jan. 27. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. On Sunday, Jan. 28, Bays United FC faces Saanich Fusion United at 4:30 p.m. at Oak Bay High. In Div. 2 play, Castaways FC meets Gorge FC at noon Sunday, Jan. 28 at Hampton.
