What's happening in Oak Bay area sports action this week

Local rugby pitches will see plenty of action this week.

At the University of Victoria, Saturday, Feb. 4, the Vikes welcome James Bay AA  for a 2:30 p.m. tilt on Wallace Field, following the clubs’ premier reserve squads’ 12:30 p.m. match-up.

At Windsor Park Saturday, Feb. 4, Div. 2 play has Castaway Wanderers 3 facing Comox for a 1 p.m. start.

Oak Bay rugby fans cheer the return of the Americas Rugby Championship this weekend, bringing two days of international play to Westhills Stadium Saturday, Feb. 4 and 11. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. with kick-off at 5 p.m. Canada takes on Argentina Feb. 4 and Chile on Feb. 11 before heading to the Mainland to face the US Feb. 18, then on to South America to play Uruguay and Brazil. Oak Bay highschool basketball returns this week with the Oak Bay boys playing out at Claremont on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Returning home, the boys host Lambrick Park at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10.

The senior girls basketball city championship gets under way Feb. 9 to 11 (schedule still to be determined) followed by the Islands Feb. 16 to 18 at Nanaimo’s Dover Bay.

Turning to the soccer pitch, the Bays United men take on the Vancouver Island Wave at 12 p.m.  Saturday, Feb. 4 at Finlayson Field.

Lower Island women’s soccer has the Castaways FC taking on the Juan de Fuca FC at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4 at PISE. On Sunday, Feb. 5, Bays United FC faces SFFC United at 12 p.m. at Tyndall Field.

In local hockey, the Victoria Cougars start their week on the road  today  (Friday, Feb. 3) when they take on the Peninsula Panthers at 7:30 p.m. at Panorama arena. They return home to Archie Browning Arena for a rescheduled game Tuesday, Feb. 7 versus the Campbell River Storm at 6:30 p.m.  Thursday, Feb. 9 brings the Westshore Wolves to play at 7 p.m. before the Cougars finish the week on the road, visiting the Saanich Braves Friday, Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Pearkes Arena for the annual Pink in the Rink fundraiser.

Synchronized swimming fans will want to head to Commonwealth Pool Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 4 and 5 to cheer on their Vikes in the Canadian University Synchronized Swimming League Western Championships.
