Jock Talk: Get active with Recreation Oak Bay this Family Day

Get active this Family Day weekend with a variety of activities through Recreation Oak Bay. Don pink or red Sunday, Feb. 11 for the Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Family Skate from 12 to 2:45 p.m. followed by an Everyone Welcome Skate from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Monday, Feb. 12 brings the Family Fun Tennis Day from 10 a.m. to noon in the tennis bubble, with free 15-minute private lessons.

In the afternoon, enjoy a free Family Day Skate from 1:30 to 3 p.m. with family-friendly music and games, and a pre-school coned-off corner. Head to the pool Monday for a free Everyone Welcome swim from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The UVic Vikes swimmers make a splash when they host Simon Fraser in an annual dual meet Feb. 10 and 11 at Saanich Commonwealth Place. The event is an important preparation meet for those aiming to peak for the coming U Sports Swimming National Championship later this month.

Hoops action also continues at the UVic tonight (Friday, Feb. 9) when the Vikes women’s basketball team hosts Fraser Valley. The action tips off at 7 p.m. in the CARSA gym.

In high school basketball play, Oak Bay’s senior boys head into playoffs take Tuesday, Feb. 13 to Saturday, Feb. 17. Look for the schedule at lowerislandschoolsports.ca. The Senior Girls’ AAA Islands hit the court at Claremont secondary Thursday, Feb. 15 to Saturday, Feb. 17.

In community sports, the Div. 1 Castaways FC women take on the Div. 1 Bays United team tonight (Friday, Feb. 9) Action kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Oak Bay High turf in what’s sure to be an intense playoff game between Oak Bay rivals.

Oak Bay men’s soccer continues this weekend with the Div. 3B Castaways FC taking on the Zgoda Juniors FC at 6 p.m, Saturday, Feb. 10 at Finlayson Turf.
