Jock Talk: Celebrate the Irish with St. Patrick’s Day recreation fun

Recreation Oak Bay invites the community to get active with St. Patrick’s Day fun March 17 starting with the Pot o’ Gold Kindergym, 11 a.m. to noon at Henderson Recreation Centre. A St. Patrick’s Day Kids Fun Swim follows at the Oak Bay pool from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., with the St. Patrick’s Everyone Welcome Skate from 7:30 to 8:45 p.m. For a full line-up of spring break activities, pick up the current Active Living Guide or visit

Also head to the tennis bubble at Oak Bay Recreation Centre to catch the action of the Spring Break Junior Tournament Thursday to Sunday, March 22 to 25.

Women’s field hockey playoff action comes to the University of Victoria turf field this weekend. The Flickers and Lynx 1 start the play on Field 1 this Saturday at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Patriots and Mariners at 11:10 a.m., the Stellers and Lynx 3 at 12:50 p.m. and the Cardinals and Jays at 4:10 p.m. On Sunday, March 18, the Renegades take on the Devils at 10:30 a.m. The women’s finals wrap up the season next weekend.

On the men’s side, Sunday brings the competitive league field hockey semi-finals to UVic Field 1, with first seed playing fourth at noon, followed by the second- and third-seed teams at 1:30 p.m. The finals and consolation match are scheduled for next Sunday, March 25.

In soccer action, Friday, March 16 has the Div. 3B Castaways FC taking on the Zgoda Juniors FC at 7:10 p.m. at PISE before Sunday, March 18 takes the UVic Alumni on the road to Nanaimo while the Castaways Juniors visiting the Cowichan Steelheads at Glasgow Field.

Looking ahead, men’s premier rugby returns on Saturday, March 24 with the UVic Premier Reserves welcoming Westshore 2 at 12:45 p.m. before the Premier team takes on Westshore 1 at 2:30 at UVic later the same day.
