Island finals in Parksville

Anticipation has been building for Taekwondo martial arts event

The anticipation has been building and it all comes together this Saturday as some 150 players of all levels ranging in age from 5-50 take centre stage at the Parksville Curling Club for the 2012 Vancouver Island Taekwondo Championships.

Parksville Taekwondo Academy is hosting the big annual event (this is the first time it’s ever been held here), and there will be nine other clubs in the mix, including Errington Taekwondo School.

According to PTA director, instructor, and 4th Dan Black Belt, Brett Fee, competition commences at 9:30 a.m. with medals being presented all day.

“And we also have a new division this year that we’re looking to showcase, it’s called Chanbara,” said the second generation local taekwondo master.

“It is one of the fastest growing Martial Arts/sports in the world, and it is very popular in Europe and Asia. We are excited, and proud to be hosting the first ever Chanbara competition in Canada.”

The old barn will be some busy with three competition rings running at the same time — there are three events in all: poomse (forms), sparring, and chanbara.
