Impact MMA showcased

There’s definitely a home team to root for at tonight’s big mixed martial arts event.

Nanaimo Impact MMA will have six fighters on the card tonight (March 26) at Battlefield Fight League: Invasion at Frank Crane Arena.

“It should showcase our club nicely,” said John Punt, Impact trainer.

Graham Spencer (6-1), Darcy James (4-3), Ryan Ballingall (3-5), Rachael Swatez (3-2), Mike Ironside (0-1) and amateur Dwayne Ganderton will all be fan favourites.

Considering Spencer’s record and stage of his career, every fight is critical, said Punt.

Spencer just returned from a month in Sacramento training with Urijah Faber’s Team Alpha Male club and is at the top of his game physically and technically. So even though he’s facing an aggressive opponent tonight, he can handle it, Punt said.

“Graham’s very good at executing his system on his opponent. He’s not a counter fighter, he’s a pressure fighter.”

As for Ballingall, he will face an opponent he drew with in the past. Punt said it’s a score to settle.

“[Ballingall] is the better fighter, he just didn’t finish,” said the trainer. “This time he’s going to hit ’er hard and just go for the finish right off the bat.”

Swatez’s fight is also anticipated, as she’s finally facing an opponent she’s targeted for two years. Ironside is well-conditioned, said Punt, which is key in a heavyweight fight, and Ganderton should have the same advantage in his matchup. The huge amateur’s background is in kung fu, but he’s been working to round out his game and will have a reach advantage in his fight.

The main event tonight is Jesse “J.T. Money” Taylor versus Clay Davidson, and the semi-main event is Bastien Huveneers against Mike Hackert.
