High school basketball tips off Tuesday in Oak Bay

What's happening in Oak Bay and area sports action this week

High school basketball returns to the court this week when St. Michaels University School’s senior boys head to Oak Bay Tuesday, Jan. 24 for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

On Thursday, Jan. 26, Glenlyon Norfolk School hosts St. Andrews for a 7:30 p.m. start.

Following last weekend’s four-game sweep, UVic’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are busy at home this weekend when they take on Lethbridge Jan. 20 and 21.

The women get things started Friday at 6 p.m. before the men tip off at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the women begin play at 5 p.m. followed by the men at 7 p.m.

Next weekend, the Vikes basketball teams host Trinity Western on Friday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Jan. 28. All games are played in the CARSA gym.

Men’s and women’s field hockey returns to the UVic turf this weekend.

Play starts for the men Sunday, Jan. 22 with the Rebels 1 team playing the Mutineers at 9 a.m., the Tigers playing the Marauders at 10:30 a.m., and the Hawks playing the Rebels  team at 2 p.m.

In women’s action, Saturday, Jan. 21, the Renegades play the Lynx 3 team at 9:30 a.m., the Swifts play the Blue Jays at 11 a.m. Lynx 2 and the Sailors follow at 12:30 p.m. and the Kestrels play the Demons at 2 p.m. The Pirates and the Devils close out play at 3:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Jan. 25 has the Flickers playing Lynx 1 at 6:30 p.m. All games will be played on UVic field 1.

On the soccer pitch, the premier division women’s soccer has the Castaways Highlanders FC taking on the Vancouver Island Wave  at noon Sunday, Jan. 22 at a field still being determined at press time.

In Div. 1 play, tonight (Friday, Jan. 20) has an 8 p.m. tilt between Bays United FC and Juan De Fuca United (field still being determined). Saturday, Jan. 21 has the Castaways FC facing SFFC United for a 6 p.m. start at Pise while Castaways FC takes on Gorge FC this Sunday, Jan. 22 at noon at Hampton.

On the men’s side, following this weekend’s roadtrip up Island, Friday, Jan. 27 has Bays United hosting Gorge FC at 8 p.m. at Oak Bay high school.

Turning to hockey, the Victoria Cougars play their final two January games on the road this week, facing the Oceanside Generals Saturday, Jan. 21 before heading to the West Shore to face the Wolves Wednesday, Jan. 25. The puck drops at 7 p.m. at The Q Centre.

The Victoria Royals spend this week on the road playing in Calgary on Friday. Continuing in Alberta, the Royals take on Red Deer Saturday, Jan. 21. Completing their week on the road, the Royals return closer to home on Friday, Jan. 27 when they play against Vancouver.

Early registration is under way for the Oak Bay Half Marathon, 10K and Relay, hitting the streets of Oak Bay Sunday, May 28. Early-bird fees continue to March 15.
