Girls soccer season ends with loss

The Pen High Lakers girls soccer team picked up a win and tie in tough season

The Pen High Lakers senior girls soccer team closed a challenging season with an 8-0 loss to Kelowna on May 15.

Lakers coach Richard Morgan said the team held its own for the opening 15 minutes.

“They are a much more skilled team,” said Morgan. “We got worn down and they pushed us off the ball.”

With it being the Lakers final game of the Okanagan Valley AAA season, Morgan and his coaches gave playing time to athletes who had not played a lot.

“It’s a young team,” said Morgan, of the group that featured Grade 10 and 11 players with three Grade 12. “Next year they should do well if they come back.”

The Lakers managed a win and tie against Salmon Arm, lost to Kelowna and Mt. Boucherie, as well as Rutland in six meetings. The Lakers opened the season with nearly 30 players and Morgan promised no cuts. Once the Pinnacles FC season began, and other personal commitments arose, numbers dropped dramatically.
