Gallaway undefeated at B.C. Masters Women’s Curling

Comox Valley rink is 4-0 and alone in first place with draw five Thursday afternoon

Sandra Gallaway’s Comox Valley rink is the only undefeated team at the B.C. Masters Women’s Curling Championship in Nanaimo.

Gallaway is 4-0 and set to face Royal City Curling Club’s Kathy Smiley (2-2) in draw five Thursday at 2 p.m. The eight-team bonspiel started March 3 and concludes March 8.

Gallaway and Karen Lepine (Langley/Cloverdale) were both 2-0 and tied for first heading into the third draw at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Gallaway (with third Mary Holden, second Mary Ellen Werner and lead Elaine Starchuk) won 8-3, scoring two in the first end, two in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth while holding Lepine to two in the second and one in the sixth.

In draw four Thursday morning, the Comox Valley rink defeated Laura Rampton (Marpole) 7-3, scoring three in the first end, one in the second and third, and two in the seventh.

Gallaway opened Tuesday with a roller-coaster 11-10 win over Lorraine Jeffries (Port Alberni).

The Comox Valley quartet led 6-1 after three ends, only to have Jeffries score six in the fourth and three in the fifth to go up 10-6. Undeterred, Gallaway scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh to tie, then won it with a single in the eighth.

Things went more smoothly on Wednesday when Gallaway defeated Bonnie Babson (Blind Bay) 5-2. Babson led 1-0 early, but Gallaway scored one in the second, third and fourth ends. Babson got one in the fifth, but Gallaway added one in the sixth and seventh to seal the deal.
