The Fraser Valley Thunderbirds improved to 5-1 in 2018 with a pair of weekend wins over the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs.
The B.C. Major Midget Hockey League teams faced off in a home-and-home.
Chilliwack’s Ethan Bowen had a goal and three assists, and Chilliwack Chiefs affiliate player Gage Goncalves added three helpers as the Thunderbirds took the Saturday night opener by a 6-3 count at Abbotsford’s MSA Arena.
Chilliwack’s Jackson Mainse added his third goal of the season, with Matthew Konrad (Abbotsford) and Justin Plett (Abbotsford) scoring two each.
Goncalves (Mission) sniped a pair in the Sunday rematch at Burnaby’s Eight Rinks, a 3-1 win for the T-Birds. Plett scored the other Fraser Valley goal with Bowen picking up an assist.
Their team improved to 21-7-1-1 as they try to keep pace with the league’s front runners. The Thunderbirds hold down third place, five points behind the second place Valley West Hawks. The Hawks (23-4-2-1) are the opponents tomorrow (Thursday) night in Langley and Sunday afternoon in Abbotsford.
The Hawks have a Chilliwack player on their roster. Forward Dawson Penner has six goals and 18 points in 30 games.
The Cariboo Cougars, with no Chilliwackians on their team, hold down top spot in the league with a record of 24-5-3-0.
